A Guide To Routine Dentistry

A visit to the dentist is what most of us dread. What makes it even scarier is that you don’t know what goes on inside your mouth. Well, that can be fixed. Keep reading to do a little bit of homework before your next routine dentistry visit.

The most common things are to do with cavities gone deep or a wisdom tooth hurting so much that it needs to be pulled out. Dental X rays are how most procedures begin so that the dentists can determine the extent of damage. Here are some of the routine dentistry procedures that you must know about:
  • Cleaning: The major part of routine dentistry involves cleaning. Routine cleaning involves removal aquaplaned tartar from your teeth. The hygienist also polishes your teeth and helps you keep a healthy and white smile. Routine cleaning reduces the risk of severe dental problems in future.
  • Filling: For a cavity, the basic thing is filling it. In this case the cavity is just a small hole on the surface of the tooth. It is filled by the dentist with a silver material or a white composite material, whichever you choose. This is a one sitting procedure and will hardly take an hour or so.
  • Root canal treatment: Now for a cavity gone deep, such that the entire tooth has decayed, a root canal treatment is prescribed. The dentist drills a hole in the center of your tooth so that he can gain easier access to the decayed pulp matter inside. It is thoroughly cleaned out and then filled. In some cases the tooth is trimmed when no part can be salvaged and a cap is fit over it. This is another very common procedure. Root canal treatment is done under local anesthesia and the dentist might prescribe some pain killers for a few days. Also this procedure is done in multiple sittings.
  • Dental crown: Fitting a dental crown over a tooth is rather common place. It is done also when the tooth is broken or chipped. It improves the look of the teeth and provides stability to the rest of the teeth around it also. Dental crowns are also used extensively in cosmetic dental surgery. They come in porcelain. Also in gold and silver!
  • Extractions: This is a very dreaded procedure. But you can keep faith in the fact that this is one of the last resort methods. Only if your teeth can’t be salvaged at all do dentists go in for an extraction. It is done in one sitting and under local anesthesia.
However, to avoid all this, ensure that you go for routine dentistry treatment every three to six months. This will ensure good oral health. Finding a good dentist though is quite a challenging task. The best way to find a reliable dentist is to search online. Check for their reviews and testimonials by the past clients. After you are satisfied, make a personal visit.

Try and look for areas like hygiene, tools and technology used, hospitality of the staff and above all does the dentist make you feel comfortable? If you are satisfied at all these fronts, then you have surely found a good and trustworthy dentist to carry out your routine dentistry procedures.
